Wide Winter Boots – Tips for Finding Wide Calf Snow Boots that Fit
To be honest, for years I never even owned snow boots because I couldn’t find anything that actually fit my wide feet and wide calves.
Thankfully, over the years more and more options have become available AND I’ve found tricks to finding the perfect fit. Here are 7 tips to finding the perfect fit:
Tip #1: Size up
For winter boots, I typically order at least 1/2 size up from my normal shoe size, depending on how reviews say the shoe fits. This allows me to have extra space for thick socks and a bit of added comfort too.
Tip #2: Look for lace up options
The idea behind going for lace-up options instead of zip-up is that you will have some extra flexibility in adding width by loosening the laces. You can give yourself an extra inch or two by doing this.
Tip #3: Go for shorter options – not knee high
When you have wide calves, opting for ankle boots instead of knee-high will significantly increase the number of options available to you. Fortunately, there are a lot of great ankle boots on the market that will work beautifully for your wider calves.
Tip #4: Know your measurements
Knowing your calf width and foot width is EXTREMELY helpful when shopping online.
If you know your calf width is 23″ (like mine), that will help you rule out MANY of the options available that only go up to a 20″ width. Unfortunately, some snow boots don’t list calf widths online so there may be some trial and error involved.
Tip #5: Pay close attention to reviews (even negative ones)
One of my favorite tips, in general, is to utilize even negative reviews to help you understand what will and won’t work for you.
For example, if you have extra-wide calves and many reviewers are saying the calf width of a boot is TOO wide for them, that might just mean those boots are YOUR perfect fit.
I also use this tip when shopping for clothes and find it very helpful.
Tip #6: Try multiple styles and brands
It’s pretty frustrating that we can mostly only find wide calf snow boots online and not in stores.
This can mean that we need to order a number of different brands and sizes and try them on at home, returning what doesn’t work.
This can be a pretty significant monetary outlay but if you can swing it – trying different options to find the best fit is ideal.
Tip #7: Invest in quality
Especially if you live in an area that gets snow frequently, it’s important to invest in the best quality option you can find and afford.
You definitely want something that is waterproof, warm, comfortable and that fits properly. All of the boots in today’s post will be just that for you.
Where to Buy Wide Calf Snow Boots
DSW (Especially Propet Extra Wide Snow Boots)
Offering brands like Skechers, Easy Street, and Propet, at DSW you’ll find options in both wide and extra wide. They offer the widest selection of Propet boot styles I’ve seen anywhere.
Propet is one of the most widely recommended snow boot brands for wide feet and calves. They also offer brands including Ryka and Wolverine.
Woman Within Extra Wide Snow Boots
Woman Within will likely be included on every wide shoe roundup published on The Plus Life because they are such an incredible resource.
It’s nice that the brand typically sells all shoe styles year-round so that you can get exactly what you need when you need it. Other retailers often only sell in-season items so it’s tough if you need something for vacation, etc.
Many styles come in a number of different foot widths which is very helpful for those of us with non-standard sizing needs. Note: not all sizes are available in wide so be sure to filter when you search!
Zappos
The user experience when shopping on Zappos is so good, and the site is often one of our first stops when shopping for any shoe. Their search function and filtering capabilities make finding the perfect fit super easy.
Amazon
Amazon is another great resource for snow boots and offers a number of different Propet styles which are available in widths up to XX Wide.
Amazon can have a lot of unfamiliar brands with questionable quality, so use caution and be sure to read reviews.
Dillards
Dillards has a small selection of wide winter boots and offers brands not found at most other retailers.
Torrid Extra Wide Boots
Torrid Water Resistant Bootie – Faux Leather
Torrid is always a go-to for wide and extra wide shoes. Their winter boots are adorable and these white water resistant booties are VERY cute!
Penningtons Wide Width Snow Boots
Skechers Wide Width Opal Winter Boots
My Canadian friends always remind me about how much they love Penningtons. I especially have gotten a lot of notes about their great boots and shoes.
Given that Canadians need great cold-weather gear and Penningtons is a Canadian company, it is a great option when searching for your wide snow boots.
Avenue
Avenue is always a great option for wide fit shoes. Their Cloudwalkers line is comfortable and roomy.
At the time of publishing, Avenue does not currently have snow boots available; however, they do have some great winter boot options.
Lane Bryant Wide Winter Boots
Lane Bryant is often another great resource for finding true wide width shoes. They have an array of riding boots, ankle boots, hiking boots, and more.
At the time of publishing, they have not yet released snow boots for the season; however, they do have other adorable boots available.
Best Extra Wide Calf Waterproof Boots
Available in two colors, black and pinecone/black, and in four different widths (M, W, X, and XX), these boots are a great find. These duck boots are both insulated and waterproof, making them great for rainy or snowy days. Reviewers say to size up.
Best Wide Calf Fur Lined Boots
I know, I know. Ugg Boots have been around forever and whether you love them or hate them there is no denying that they are the ultimate winter boot for both comfort and warmth. While these don’t technically come in wide width or wide calf options, this style works for both wide or extra wide calves and feet.
Currently available in four colors (chestnut, black, grey, and thunder cloud – pictured), the button closure allows for flexibility in calf widths. Note: while there are many styles of Ugg Boots available, this Bailey Button Style is the best wide calf friendly option.
Faux Fur Lined Bootie (also in black)
While UGG boots are undoubtedly much higher quality, if you need a true extra wide fit and UGGS don’t work for you, these are a great option. Note: the UGG brand boots are water-resistant but this Torrid version does not appear to be, making them better for non-snowy winter days.
Best Winter Boots for Wide Feet and Calves
If you have both wide feet and wide calves, the selection from Woman Within might be your best bet! As a plus size retailer, Woman Within offers a variety of styles (of both clothing and shoes) that work for larger bodies.
While the ComfortView line is a go-to for boots and shoes from Woman Within, you can also find select styles of Propet brand boots, another favorite for winter boots for wide feet and calves.
The Brienne Waterproof Boot by Comfortview
The Brienne Waterproof Boot is available in grey, black, and merlot in sizes 7-12. Both medium and wide widths are available. Reviewers say they run a little small. You can click here to find other great Woman Within winter boot options.
For those of us with wider calves, sometimes it’s more convenient to wear an ankle boot instead of a taller style. These Propet Lumi Ankle Zip boots come in several colors in sizes 6-11.
There are four width options available (medium, wide, extra wide, and extra extra wide).
Other Favorite Wide Calf Winter Boots
This Leighton Weather Boot is a suede-like material with faux fur lining. It is available in both brown and black in sizes 7-12 (medium, wide, and extra wide widths). Reviewers say these are both very warm and comfortable.
