Tips for Wearing Plus Size Leggings
Before we dive into the 7 featured outfits in today’s post, these tips for wearing plus size leggings will be extremely helpful as you shop for leggings and create your own outfits!
Tip #1: Fit is KEY
When leggings are too tight they can often become see-thru and show more skin than we may want. If they’re too loose, they can become saggy and bunch up around the knees and ankles.
When they’re too long, they can gather at the ankles and create an undesirable look.
Taking the time to find the perfect fit is so worth it! As such, I always recommend taking your measurements and referencing brands’ size charts when shopping online.
If you’re petite, consider trying cropped or 7/8 length leggings to wear as full length OR consider hemming leggings if they’re too long.
Tip #2: Have fun with fabrics
While there’s nothing wrong with basic cotton leggings, you can also have a lot of fun by incorporating fabrics that aren’t as traditional such as these:
Tip #3: Shirt length matters
Typically you’ll want to wear longer length tops and tunics or even dresses with leggings.
If you do want the look of leggings with shorter shirts, consider wearing ponte knit pants which are a bit thicker but provide the same look. This will provide more butt coverage.
Tip #4: Quality is KEY
If you plan to wear leggings frequently (like I do), you’ll want to consider buying higher quality styles that won’t wear out quickly or won’t rip or become sheer after several washes.
If you don’t wear leggings often or aren’t concerned about replacing them often, you can stick with the budget friendly options we share later in the post.
Tip #5: Choose underwear wisely
Leggings don’t always leave a lot to the imagination so it’s important to wear the right underwear. I like to stick to non-lacy styles in a similar color to the leggings.
Tip #6: Remember that YOU make the rules
Personal style is truly SO personal, and it’s important that you feel your best in your clothes. Don’t focus too much on trends or even my tips – and choose what YOU love.

Members of The Plus Life Community on Facebook swear by Walmart leggings, specifically the Terra & Sky Brand.
I recently learned a very helpful tip for searching for plus size clothes on walmart.com that I wanted to pass along.
Similar to Amazon, Walmart is an online marketplace and allows other retailers to sell items on their website.
If you’re looking to shop brands sold directly by Walmart, you should always filter by retailer and select Walmart only.
This significantly improved the online shopping experience at Walmart.
